Billy and Mia stand back-to-back on a wooded path at blue-hour twilight, both looking toward the viewer with tense, guarded expressions after their first disagreement.

The First Spark of a Story

Posted on May 29, 2026May 29, 2026 by Doug Bayliss

Some stories arrive fully formed.

Most do not.

Often, they begin with one small detail.

A name, a place, a strange image, a line of dialogue, or a question that refuses to go away.

For me, one recent story idea began with a name:

Aloysius.

The name immediately felt old, formal, and a little mysterious. It sounded like someone who belonged near a river road, behind a locked gate, or inside a house where people knew more than they were willing to say.

That was enough to make me curious.

I began to see the shape of a possible character. Not a villain, necessarily. Not a hero either. More like someone who might stand at the edge of the story and quietly influence what happens next.

Aloysius feels like the kind of character who might know an old family secret. He might understand something about the land, or the people who came before. He might even tempt a younger character into making a dangerous choice.

That is where stories often begin.

That is what makes a story worth following.

Aloysius may or may not become the center of a future book. Sometimes early ideas change. But that is part of the process.
